An air scour is a cleaning procedure in a deep bed filter that may accompany backwashing. A flow of air is passed through the bed in the reverse direction to the normal (downward) filtration direction with the aim to break up and dislodge deposits. The air scour can also be applied prior to the reverse flow of wash water.
