Asymmetric Membrane*

A membrane in which the pore size and structure vary from one side of the membrane to the other.  Membrane surfaces in the feed channel usually exhibit smaller pore sizes than those present further into the depth when the membrane is used for reverse osmosis, nanofiltration and ultrafiltration.
